Call for better engagement between
food security scientists and policymakers

Earlier this month at the First International Conference on Global Food Security in the Netherlands attendees called for greater engagement between the food security scientific communities and policymakers. Conference co-chair and plant production systems professor Martin van Ittersum argued that this could be achieved through an impartial platform, much like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which provides opportunities for climate change researchers to share scientific information with policymakers. Plans to develop this impartial panel were not fully developed during the meeting. Additionally, attendees recommended that scientists engage existing mechanisms like the Committee on World Food Security to achieve these goals instead of creating new ones to reach policymakers.
