Overview
The horticulture sector in Bangladesh produces 3.2 million metric tons/year but smallscale farmers suffer economic losses due to lack of high yielding varieties and hybrids, postharvest technologies, food safety issues and processing facilities. Among them, the food safety issues resulting from high chemical and microbial content and due to unhygienic production and storage facilities affect the marketable produce, human health and food quality. Postharvest losses in Bangladesh are 38%, and it accounts for significant potential income loss mostly to smallscale farmers, the majority of whom are women.
Objectives
This project establishes the South Asia Consortium on Food Safety that will be a collaborative initiative by institutions from Bangladesh, India and U.S., and it will be robust and flexible enough to later on include other nations in South Asia. The consortium will work towards solving researchable questions, improving technical skills, good agricultural practices (GAP), and capacity building in Bangladesh with the help of the scientific expertise available at US institutions and local expertise available in India. India's involvement as a strategic partner will assist Bangladesh with both research and training.
