This presentation describes the objectives and types of PES (payments for environmental services) programs in the United States. The cost-effectiveness of various aspects of program approaches is discussed, such as competitive producer enrollment and benefit-cost targeting. Two major U.S. agri-environmental programs, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) and the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), are compared and discussed.
