Description
Abstract: Commercial shrimp farming in southern Honduras began in 1972 with the establishment of Sea Farms of Honduras near Punta Raton on the Gulf of Fonseca. Sea Farms was located on playon (salt flats) and private land shared with cattle ranchers. Water was pumped from Estero Los Butus, an embayment ofthe Gulf of Fonseca. Sea Farms expanded from 45 to about 300 hectares during the decade that followed, accounting for almost all shrimp production in Honduras.
