Overview
This project studied the influence of varying levels of nitrogen application on the incidence of bulb rot disease in onion under storage using ‘Red Creole’ and ‘Yellow Granex’ varieties. The study was conducted in a farmer’s field in Talavera, Nueva Ecija from December 2002 to March 2003 for the pre-harvest phase and in the cold storage in Cabanatuan City (post-harvest phase) from April
Objectives
To determine the influence of field applied nitrogen on bulb rot incidence during storage in two varieties of onion.
Outcomes
Yellow Granex' is not responsive to nitrogen application. However, application of 50 kg N/ha in 'Red Creole' resulted in highest yield. Hence, results of this study can help farmers lessen the amount of N application to reduce production costs. Although N levels did not influence the occurrence of bulb rot in storage, it was noted that cold storage can effectively control bulb rot disease in onions
