Overview

A study was conducted of the policies affecting pesticide use in Ecuador. Nominal rates of protection (NPR’s) and equilibrium exchange rates were calculated to quantify the degree of pesticide subsidy or tax in Ecuador from 1987 to 1996. The results indicated that the subsidy on pesticides has decreased substantially over the period to less than 5%. A demand function for pesticides was estimated to quantify the effect of price distortions on pesticide demand, but a statistically significant function was not obtained rendering quantification difficult.

Objectives

The objective of this study was to investigate policies affecting pesticide use in Ecuador.

Outcomes

Three training manuals on the correct use of pesticides and recognizing symptoms of pesticide poisoning were edited.
