This article discusses China’s Sloping Land Conversion Program (SLCP), assessing both innovative and problematic aspects of the program. Four suggestions to improve the program are: 1) greater community involvement; 2) more technical and financial support; 3) clearer specification of the targeted environmental services and expectations; and 4) integration of SLCP with other rural policies.
