Overview

The goal of this work is to produce a satellite based index that can accurately predict yields in three pilot areas in rural Tanzania. The pilot area includes the outgrower scheme near Kilombero Plantations Limited (KPL) in South-central Tanzania. This work is the centerpiece of a larger project to design an index insurance contract that can successfully protect smallholder farmers against negative covariant shocks such as droughts and floods.
