Description

A poster presented at the 2012 Global Pulse Researchers Meeting, Kigali, Rwanda- “Transforming Grain-Legume Systems to Enhance Nutrition and Livelihoods”. Abstract: To determine the occurrence of soil borne pathogens and the effect of Rhizobium inoculation on root health of 15 common bean lines, a field trial was carried out. The trial was carried out in a root rot nursery at the TARS Experiment Station in Isabela. Early nodulation and root rot severity (DS) were assessed 15 days after planting. Isolations were conducted from root and hypocotyl tissue using three artificial media. Prevalent pathogens were Fusarium solani, Pythium spp, Sclerotium rolfsii and Fusariumspp. Disease severity averaged 3.2 (scale 1-9). Number of nodules ranged from 21 to 40 and they were located in the root crown. Line PRO737-2 was nodulated efficiently by Rhizobium tropici CIAT 899 and Rhizobium etli UMR 1597. Line PR9745-232 nodulated better with strain CIAT 899 and 10IS-2423 (small red) nodulated better with strain UMR-1597.
