Overview
To increase seed production and yield stability of cowpeas grown in hot semiarid zones by subsistence farmers. The focal point of this research will be the development of “Mini-Kit” pre-extension trials to compare local methods with experimental treatments of cowpea cultivars, management methods and conservation practices. Research on experiment stations and experiments in farmers’ fields will focus on breeding, agronomy, plant pathology, rhizobiology, entomology and cowpea storage. In the U.S., research will focus on the development of techniques for screening cowpeas for resistance to drought and heat and on other factors limiting yield potential.
